Troubleshoot bank connection issues

Tips to help troubleshoot connecting to your bank accounts

Stowe uses Plaid to securely connect your financial accounts. Most accounts connect smoothly, but sometimes a bank connection may not work right away.

Connection issues can happen for a few reasons, including temporary bank outages, security settings at your financial institution, outdated login details, or extra steps required by your bank.

Wealthsimple

Existing: Sometimes, Wealthsimple asks for the 2FA code a second time when connecting accounts.

When asked a second time for a code, simply input the code again.

Try connecting again later

Sometimes your financial institution may be temporarily unavailable or unable to respond to Plaid’s connection request. If this happens, try connecting again in a few hours or the next day. Plaid notes that temporary technical issues at the financial institution are a common reason a connection may fail. (Plaid Support).

Check your login details

Make sure the username and password you enter are correct.

It can help to sign in directly to your financial institution’s website first to confirm your login is working.

Use your bank’s website, not just the app

Some banks require you to update settings from their website instead of their mobile app.

Plaid recommends logging into your financial institution’s website and checking for settings related to third-party sharing, often under privacy or security settings. (Plaid)

Check for account setup steps

If the account is new, make sure it is fully set up.

This may include:

  • Activating your card

  • Setting up online banking

  • Confirming your contact details are up to date

  • Accepting any new bank terms or disclosures

  • Completing any security prompts from your financial institution

Complete any security checks

Your bank may ask you to complete extra authentication before sharing account data with Plaid.

This may include:

  • A one-time passcode

  • Security questions

  • Multi-factor authentication

  • Confirming the connection through your bank’s website or app

Follow the prompts from your bank or Plaid to complete the connection.

Try reconnecting the account

If an account was connected before but stopped updating, try reconnecting it from Stowe.

  1. Open Stowe.

  2. Go to the Dash tab.

  3. Tap the connected banks icon in the top right.

  4. Select the account or institution with the issue.

  5. Follow the prompts to reconnect or update the connection.

Try a manual account instead

If your financial institution is not supported or the connection still does not work, you can add an account manually.

Manual accounts let you add balances and import transactions using a CSV file.

To add a manual account:

  1. Go to the Dash tab.

  2. Tap the connected banks icon in the top right.

  3. Tap Add bank.

  4. Choose Manual.

  5. Follow the prompts to create the account.
